How to wrap a wing mirror

Demand for vehicle wrapping continues to grow with many car and fleet owners choosing this type of application. While car wrap is a creative craft, it is also technically demanding and wrapping a wing mirror is particularly technically challenging.

Due to skills required to wrap a vehicle’s wing mirror, training is essential. At Spandex we help our customers learn and develop their vehicle wrap skills. We have created tutorial videos on specific aspects of vehicle wrapping.

Wrapping a car’s wing mirrors is a great way for owners to add individual styling to their vehicle. For instance, a wrapped wing mirror will make your vehicle stand out from the vast majority of cars with their single-colour bodywork or as part of a full or partial vehicle wrap. A wing mirror wrap is the ideal, low cost way to give a car a unique look, while also providing paint protection for the mirrors.

Spandex offers a choice of colours and materials that is almost unlimited. The choice of wrap material will dictate the type of technique required with 3M, Orafol and Avery Dennison wrap materials requiring a different technique. As a result, we are presenting three different techniques to wrap wing mirrors.

In all cases, the first thing to do is to ensure that you have all the correct tools for the job: lint-free cloths, the surface preparation and a squeegee specific to the wrapping film you’re using, 3M Knifeless Design Line Tape, a retractable bladed scalpel and a wrap edition heat gun.

Stage 1
The process starts with thoroughly cleaning the wing mirror with a lint-free cloth in conjunction with a surface preparation cleaner; 3M surface preparation cleaner, Orafol pre-wrap surface cleaner and Avery Dennison surface cleaner depending on your choice of vehicle wrap film. Then, apply 3mm 3M Knifeless Design Line Tape to the wing mirror wherever you need a clean edge to the film on a surface of the wing mirror. Lastly, apply heat over the tape with your heat gun to ensure correct adhesion.

The next stage depends on your choice of vinyl wrap.

Stage 2
Due to the fact wrapping a wing mirror can be a slightly tricky job, we’ve created some videos that illustrate the best way to apply three of the most popular wrapping materials. These materials are 3M™ 2080 Wrap Film Series, 3M™ 1080 Wrap Film Series, Oracal® 970RA Premium Wrapping Cast, and also Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film.
